My Farmhouse Chic Living Room

I have a very strange blend of styles.  I love shiplap and pallet art but also want chunky woven blankets and furry pink pillows.  You think there’s something on Pinterest for everyone until you’re me and you can’t find someone who has such a wild blend of styles.  Think LA meets down south Georgia.  The closest I’ve found (and trust me, my Pinterest boards are riddled with it) is rustic chic.  I have been working on transforming my contemporary farmhouse living room to the rustic, fluffy, sparkly, vintage room of my dreams.  It is far from done, but it is closer than it has ever been!  Welcome to my farmhouse chic living room!

Just to note, I have the blessed curse of a wall full of windows and 2 French doors.  It’s every woman’s dream until you have to take pictures at three times of the day to try to avoid either too much light or not enough.  So please, bear with me that my photos aren’t the best.  I really tried, okay?!

Here is my room from above so you can get your bearings.  All I had to do was put up a ladder that reached my ceiling fan so I could jump onto the fan and then get my husband to quickly move the ladder so I could take this picture.  Kidding, I have a loft.  And also I don’t have a ladder nearly tall enough to reach my ceiling fan.

My main theme is greys, whites/creams, and blush pinks.  Surprisingly, my husband didn’t even bat an eyelash when I came home with those pink furry monstrosity pillows.  Is he numb?  Should I be worried?  I’m going to try to point out as I go but I’m not 100% sure where everything came from because some of it was purchased a long time ago and some of it came with our house.  We were lucky enough to purchase this home fully furnished so, while most of it is gone, there are still remnants of its previous owner.

Our sofa is one of those hand-me-downs I mentioned earlier.  Unfortunately I have no idea where it came from, but it treats us well.

Pillows (left to right) – Ikea, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Ikea and Ikea (if you saw my Ikea essentials post, you wouldn’t be surprised).

The knit throw is from Target’s brand Threshold and I got it a few years back on Black Friday.  And finally, the fur throw/rug is also from Ikea.

Behind the sofa is this 8-cube bookshelf from Target.  The chicken wire baskets are from Walmart and I wish I had 100 more of them.  One of the newest additions to my living room is this animal skull print I got from Hobby Lobby – I’m OBSESSED!  The candlesticks are from At Home, the small “FARM” sign is from Dollar General (I know, right?!), the lamp was from the previous owners and the lantern is Ikea.  The little handkerchief you see was personalized with love from my amazing grandmother and the little flower thing on it is my husband’s boutineer from my sister’s wedding.  I love little memories like this and I think they really personalize your home.  Another example is the glass bottle on the small shelves that are pictured to the very left above.  My husband and I filled it with sand on our first anniversary trip to Florida.  Ah, young love.  I’ve also got quite the collection of tiny animals going on now.  From left to right, we have a porcelain (?) dachshund given to me just because I love dachshunds, a tiny camel we got at Ruby Falls in Tennessee, and finally a rhino my sister brought back with her from Kenya.  It’s my own little zoo!

If you swing around to the other side of the room, you will see Rambo’s head.  Rambo is my Yorkie poo and will often show as a grey blur in my photos.  But he is not part of my décor.  The recliner is from Badcock and was not my ideal design choice, but compromise, right?  The rocking chair is from Ikea, but also came with the house.  On it is another throw from a Black Friday at Target (you guys, skip the new Xbox and sprint for the throws.  $5!!!) and another blush colored pillow from Bed, Bath, and Beyond.  The rug is another recent find from At Home and was only $30-40. Not bad!

Afterthought: Harlie, why is there a floating wind chime in your living room?  Well, this is a fun story.  The previous owners had a wind chime hanging there and I was like “This is stupid” and took it down almost immediately.  Then about 30 minutes and 2 heads bumping the underneath of the staircase I went “We need to put something there so we don’t hit our heads on the staircase”.  I stared at it for maybe 20 seconds and that’s when I realized the wind chime was there to discourage you from walking underneath the lower part of the stairs.  Genius.  (Although I’ve had at least 3 people still run into the wind chime AND the staircase and at that point it’s just your own fault)

First, lets address a few things. 1) Those pillows hide some hideous cords that are randomly sticking out of my wall. 2) That giant glass circle you see on the left-hand side is the top of our dining room table.  This house, for some reason, decided to nix the dining room and I refuse to get rid of that table because it’s beautiful.  One day you will be able to see it in all of it’s glory.  Also, for some reason, we chose to store the glass table top in our living room behind our spiral staircase.  I really can’t tell you why we did that. 3) That light switch really messes up my groove.  Why is it there?

Anyways, this table was a hand-me-down from my mom that I refinished with grey chalk spray paint.  I’m pretty sure the basket/tray on it is from TJ Maxx as well as the pillows below it.  The books I’ve picked up from our local 2nd and Charles, which has FREE baskets outside that often have some fun finds like this!  I think the vase and the candlestick behind it are from Bargain Hunt, which is a secondhand store, so they originally came from somewhere else.  You also get a tiny sneak peek of a little hummingbird sculpture that again is from my grandmother.  Above the table I have a regular old window pane that I taped Ikea prints in to make this unique art piece.

Backing up a little, this furry footstool is from hobby lobby.  Behind it you’ll see a little mystery basket with more books and candlesticks.  The candlesticks are again from bargain hunt and the balls are from Ikea.  These books are just a few of my favorites spine side down to make them look a little more uniform (except the only book you can actually see – “Heaven is for Real” which I’ve never read but someone gave to us and apparently got for 20% off from Target).  And finally, another Ikea lantern sitting to the left of the basket.

Here you can see my mess of cords on the righthand side.  We don’t talk about them.  This candle holder/bird cage/??? I got on sale from TJ Maxx because the glass was missing on 2 sides, but no one has yet to notice and I got a serious steal on it!  Inside is my bouquet from my sister’s wedding in a glass vase.

I saved this to the end because we actually made the coffee table and matching side tables. The tutorial can be found here from Little Glass Jar.  On it, the bowl is from Kirklands along with the stuff inside of it.  The fabric runner is from Walmart and I also have a woodwick candle out because candles are everything.

Finally, overlooking my living room is this beautiful reminder.  It doesn’t really match the rest of the room, but I love this verse and it is a GIANT reminder when I start getting anxious.  It was a decoration from one of our annual woman’s retreats, Revive (if you are a Georgia peach, visit lightusthiscity.com to learn more.  This year’s retreat is only a few weeks away!)

I hope you enjoyed this peek into my life!  If you’re interested in any other rooms in my house or seeing the other ladies’ living rooms, let us know in the comments below.

Until next time,

Harlie
